To know the difference

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Today, all I am writing about is a personal question. I am drawing on the courage to change something. And so I ask.

Me, to you.

“Will you please support environmental issues, in any way you can?” Because “any way you can” won’t take much effort. At all. If you’ll just continue.

I know some of you think the environmental issues are a farce. A waste of time and money. A bunch of rubbish. And that is your freedom and right, and I thank you, at the very least, for your consideration of this idea.

But I say it is rubbish. Our rubbish. Our human blemish on the face of this earth. And we are affecting others.

This morning, I read a lengthy article about Sea Turtles. Very big numbers of them are dying on the coast of Florida, United States of America.

It is a mass mortality event. And the people who do the good research say this will impact the recovery of the protected species.

Seventeen have been recovered off Sanibel and Captiva islands near Fort Myers. This, just in the past week.

On average, they get about 30 dead Sea Turtles a year. In this June & July alone, they have almost 60 on Sanibel.

Okay. This crushes me. Whenever we go to a Zoo, or an Aquarium, I always find the Giant Sea Turtles, and I watch them. I put my face right up to the glass, and I stand very still, in hopes that one will come over and look me in the eyes. It has happened on a few occasions. It is a feeling like I’ve never known.

Do you know that Sea Turtles are one of the most ancient creatures on the earth? They are. Sea Turtles have been around since the time of those old, old dinosaurs. And those turtles haven’t changed, not much at all, in over 110 million years! There is a heaping load to love about them, too.

But once they are gone, they are gone. And we dumb humans are figuring out a way to do this, after 110 million years.

So. How does one support, if you are so inclined? You don’t have to give money, or roll up your pants and wade in dirty rivers. No. But you can use that might sword by your side. You can vote. You can even talk. You know, when you are at a bar, having drinks, and Billy and Jeb say that Global Warming is a bunch of crap. You can say, “I think it is a big problem, and it is killing things like our Polar Bears, and Sea Turtles, and our Coral Systems, and a thousand other things.” And then Billy & Jeb will argue with you and call you some kind of Pansy-Hillary-Follower. WHY, oh WHY, do people always bring up Hillary Clinton, when you ask them to consider a new and different way of thinking? I don’t understand what the Hillary has to do with any of any of any of it. So. Anyway.

Do, or don’t, care about the environment. It is up to you.

For my own sanity, I have to realize that I don’t have any power over anyone except myself. Ultimately, the only thing I truly have control over is my “reaction” to the people, places, things, and events of this world. That’s it.

But I can do my best to follow the Serenity Prayer, if I can only remember to say it, 1,000 times a day.

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
