An outage. Tonight we have one. Of the electrical variety. In fact, we haven’t had electricity since about 3:30 this afternoon. It is getting warm in here and we do not have screens in our windows. It doesn’t bother me so much, as it does our elderly dogs.
Being without electric makes you appreciate the things that happen on a normal clip each day. Like cooking food. And being on the internet. Or watching Netflix.
We are lucky enough to have a generator, which runs a few things. I have my computer plugged into one of those outlets right now. And my lamp. And a TV with no channels.
The truth of things is, I am such a servant to my routines. I really am. My coffee in the morning. The ease at which I can have anything I wish to eat. A warm and safe shelter. And then there is the connectivity to the rest of the world through wireless wires.
Today marks the 10th Anniversary of the iPhone. The Internet came to the public Preble County in the very late 1990s. It has been a slow IV drip ever since. And the whole television thing was around before the time of my birth. It is amazing, the things we get accustomed to.
The comfort zone.
So yes. The electric went out. And I am reminded, that there is a squirrel somewhere, on a power line, having a far worse day than I. But there are other atrocities. There is a child who has not had a thing to eat in nearly a week. A spouse who just moments ago, lost their loved one to a heart attack. Some new driver had their first car accident, in their Dad’s new car. An elderly man sits by a window and wishes for a visitor. A woman cowers in the kitchen, when she hears the front door slam, not knowing if her husband will beat her tonight.
I am thankful beyond measure that the worst thing to happen to my day is losing the electric. Because I have been given so much more.
