Word up.

Language. The great communicator. We all use many different languages. Body language. Numbers. Signs. Scripts. Albeit, most Americans only speak English. Which is a bit of a shame, I think. In many European (and other world) countries, the education systems integrate three or four different languages before a kid turns eight. I wish the U.S. did this, or would have done this, when I was young. Regardless, I really like words.

So tonight, I’ve turned to a random word generator.

And we’ll see where it goes.

First word to spew out: Herd
Wouldn’t you know? I like a herd. It is generally a large group of animals…. especially mammals with hooves at the ends of their legs. And they stick together, yes they do. They live, feed, or migrate together. Although…sometimes… they are kept together as livestock.

Like antelope, bison, cattle, deer, donkeys, rabbits and reindeer. To be honest, seeing a herd of rabbits might be a little intimidating. If such a thing ever happens, I would suggest having a dump truck filled with carrots on hand.

Next random word: Buffet
Another word I am fond of, only because I enjoy a well-appointed Buffet. It is.. .mostly… a meal consisting of several dishes. And guests walk through the line and serve themselves. But I am picky about a buffet too. I like the kind at picnics, and family reunions. I am not so crazy about cafeterias, and places like Big Bertha’s All-You-Can-Eat-Buffet $10.99.

Next word: Stun
This reminds me of a lot of things. Superheroes. Boxing. Politicians. And more. To stun means to knock unconscious or into a dazed state. I think we can stun someone in both a good way, and a bad way, depending. Soooo… Superheroes are always fighting those Villians who have a corner on the market of Stun Guns. Then there is Boxing. The obvious. They get into the ring and punch each other senselessly. And here lately… Politicians. There are not too many days, in the past 7 months, when I haven’t completely stunned by the headlines coming out of the White House.

Up now: Harlot.
A prostitute or promiscuous woman. I’ve never met a prostitute. At least, not that I know of. The closest I’ve come was in high school. I went to Chaminade-Julienne in downtown Dayton, Ohio. There were several mornings when you would have to step over a drunken homeless person, on the steps going into school. And most mornings, there would be prostitutes there on South Ludlow. They’d always try to bum a cigarette from you, or a light. It was a great school, but we had a bit of a gauntlet to run through in getting there.

Last word for the night: Empathetic
My favorite word of the random lot. If we are empathic, we are showing an ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Empathy is an incredible thing to display. It runs hand and hand with awareness, and compassion.

It is very easy for us, at times, to be judgmental. I found myself doing this just last week. I don’t like it when I get that way. And I did not even know the people I made this mental judgment on. I merely saw them in a gas station parking lot.

I didn’t agree with something they were doing. But, I could have taken a few extra moments to imagine, or consider, other things that might have been affecting their lives. And if I had come up with a few different scenarios, I probably would not have put a rubber stamp on them. Blindly. Without knowing them.

Maybe that is how we become more compassionate, and empathetic. But using our good heads to give things more thought. More possibilities. More awareness.

Just maybe.

And finally, the herd of rabbits ran to the buffet, where they were greeted by a harlot, who stunned them with her good looks. The hungry horde of mice were empathetic of the entire situation.

And that’s all I have to say about that.
