What a DAY it is.

Do you even care, Bear?

The people who create the Holidays are at it again.

On September 9th, they really felt the need to cram it in. The Party Gods must be doing the Electric Slide, or something.

9/9 Holiday Hit List:
National Teddy Bear Day
National Grandparents Day
National Hug Your Hound Day
National Wiener Schnitzel Day
National Pet Memorial Day
National Care Bears Share Your Care Day

I kid you not. It is looking like my Dance Card may be full.

First, we should note, that the Holiday Industry barely waits until Labor Day before they start filling the aisles with Halloween paraphernalia. Pumpkin Heads and Witches’ Hats. Candy Corn til Christmas.

I guess since the “Heavy-Hitter Observances” can start at the crack of dawn, all of the “Underling Holidays” have decided to go out of control as well.

What does one REALLY do on National Teddy Bear Day? I mean, really. Take the thing out to dinner? Bake it a cake?

Or.
Hug Your Hound.
On the Most Popular Dog Breed List for 2018, not one Hound Breed makes the cut until #39 — the Bassett Hound. And then, Bloodhounds at #50, and the Irish Wolfhound at #72. Most of the rest of the hounds fall into the way bottom. I guess just because you are not popular, doesn’t mean you don’t need a hug. But then, hugging your hound should be a daily thing. Not just once a year on September 9.

And then there is National Wiener Schnitzel Day. I like a good schnitzel. For those who don’t know schnitzel, it is meat, usually thinned by pounding it all to hell. Really thin. And then that piece of meat — usually veal — is coated with eggs, and flour. Finally, it is fried in some kind of oil or fat. Deeply Fried Veal. That means Baby Cows. Yes, Baby-Helpless-Cows who barely had a chance to see the world, or do any good mooing at all.

I recently had an entire “allergy” screening done. I am essentially allergy free. No food reactions, or chemical reactions to anything, including house cleaners or artificial sweeteners. But the one thing that showed up on my “High Alert” list was Veal. Baby Helpless Cows. It is like the Universe was telling me something. Love the Baby-Helpless-Cows. And as such, I protest the Holiday, with signs, and marches. It is deeply ingrained in me.

On to the next. Grandparents Day. Again, we all know how Grandparents are. They go way overboard all year long. Ga-Ga. I’m not sure how this “Feast Day” is ever going to help that situation. It seems to make things even more uncontrollable with the Grandparent Brain Syndrome. It perpetuates their need to buy gifts. Always their need to sugar-up the grandkid.

Oh. The next one. Pet Memorial Day. We have all lost our pets. Those who had special bonds, know how excruciating this is. Out of the clear blue, the “longing” can hit you. Any time. Anywhere. I think having a Pet Memorial Day is a little unnecessary. We remember our beautiful companions when our hearts fill with the big lonely.

And, switching gears. National Care Bears Share Your Care Day. When the Care Bears started in 1981, there were 10 of them. Like Cheer Bear, Friend Bear, and Wish Bear. These days there are hundreds. Hundreds. They should be the “Care Rabbits” as fast as they are reproducing. I think Funshine Bear got a little too lucky with Good Luck Bear, and from there, things really snowballed.

Personally, I don’t think they need any type of goading, to show more care. If you get my drift.

Amidst all of this though, one little bear stepped through, from the dust, and the smoke, and the rubble, from all these Holidays.

“Do-Your-Best Bear.”
And. I think.
No matter what day of the year it is, he should be our little mascot.

We don’t need a holiday to tell us. The most we can do, is to do our best.
Okay, Okay. For crying out loud. Go hug somebody’s hound, will ya’?
