Those better be magic beans

Just when you thought you had heard it all. This just in. There is a coffee shop in California. They were selling cups of coffee. For $75 a cup. And they sold out.

Here is the back story. The coffee chain is called Klatch Coffee Roasters. Apparently, the company came into some mighty fine beans. They are called Elida Geisha 803 coffee beans and they hail from Panama.

The coffee shop placed a bid and won them at some sort of a bean auction, so the story goes. They were sold at $803 per pound. I didn’t realize bean auctions even existed. But there they are. This one is called the “Best of Panama Green Auction.” From the article I read, this is called the “Oscars for coffee.” Bean Auctions. Oscars. Celebrity Roasts.

This Klatch place snatched up 10 pounds of beans which works out to about 80 servings of coffee. They sold every one.

According to the report, they sold each cup at $75. This number, times 80 cups, equals $6,000. They spent $8030 by my math. It seems to me they lost on the deal, although the article didn’t mention this item.

But here is the thing. Who would spend $75 on a cup of coffee? Apparently, 80 people in Southern California and all the ones lined up afterward.

Call me crazy, but if I paid $75 for a cup of coffee, it better be a 70 gallon cup.

Here are some other things I noticed today.

The top 26 Billionaires own $1.4 trillion — as much as 3.8 billion other people in the world.

In 2018, 40.6 million people lived in poverty in the USA. That means the poverty rate was 12.7%. That’s a lot.

I don’t know what the answers are, but it seems to me that we won’t find them in a $75 cup of coffee. And I am just as guilty, in that I have given in to extravagant things in my life. I’ve eaten at fine restaurants. I drive a good car. I have some fine computers. And a lot more.

It just seems that things have become wildly disjointed. The ultra-rich, those billionaires, continue to amass more and more wealth. And the poor. Well, they just keep getting poorer.

Being aware is a first step.
Finding ways to help is more of a challenge. But doing any thing — any little thing — is a very good start.
