The Draft

There have been a lot of questions about the new addition. But I have to note, at this point, we live in a connected Universe. And that is how it happened.

His full name is Lewis Michael Kronenberger. Lewey. It could have easily been Louis. But there is already a semi-famous Louis Kronenberger, an author and critic. So to avoid any future confusion, I opted for this spelling of Lewis.

He isn’t really named for anyone in particular, but there have been a bucketload of spectacular people with that name. Lewis Carol, C.S. Lewis, several King Louis’, Meriwether Lewis, Louis Pasteur, Shari Lewis, Edmondia Lewis, Louis Armstrong, Al Lewis, Louis Braille, and on and on and on. So yes. Little Lewey.

He is small, only weighing 1.9 pounds. As such, he has quite the routine with food and medicine. We have to keep his little belly full at all times, which requires middle-of-the-night feedings. I had about 2 hours sleep last night, but Mary kept an eye on him this afternoon, so I could get a nap.

His “breed” is called Teddy Bear. A mix of Shih Tzu and Bichon Frise. A Shih Chon. His litter mates were much larger than he.

Lewey is a Gemini. And we know how THEY can be. I could go on about the mutable qualities of Gemini, but I will not. We will have to wait and see if Lewey is true to this Sign or not.

More important than his Zodiacal Direction, is his bladder. That little Buddy is starting to pee outside. This is a bonus. We still have a loooonnnnng way to go, but I think we are heading in the right direction.

And then there is Ollie. She seemed pretty excited, and completely happy when they met. She played earnestly with him. Gentle. Sweet. Darting this way and that. Teasing him, and running. Then, as the day wore on, she figured out that Lewey wasn’t leaving. And when we all went to bed, she was displaying a huge case of the “pouts.” This has carried forward.

And to the rest. How he came to be ours.

I was grieving Frances and Max pretty hard. Mary suggested it might be time for me to find a new dog-pal. So I started looking. Our last few dogs have all been rescues…. and I vowed I would only have rescues from now until the end of time.

Well. One thing I am learning again, and again, in this life is a very old adage. “Never say never.”

I scoured the Human Societies for a couple of weeks. All that were in a 100-mile radius. There are 7,428 Chihuahuas in the shelters. And almost that many Jack Russell Terriers. Unfortunately, they didn’t seem like they would be a good fit for us.

It is a long story from there, but I happened upon our “Lewey” for sale from a breeder. And now we have him and he has us.

I am still so very sad about losing Frances and Max. But I think they would want me to find a new happiness with another dog. I can never replace them. Or ever hope to. But I can start on a different path, with a new spirit, and a new way.
