Shortcake Laps

Don’t let anyone tell you differently, but right now you are doing laps. All this time, you thought everyone else was in the “workout” game? And not you? Pishaw, I say. You are doing laps.

Well. Around the Sun. And your age will tell you just how many times.

I guess it is kind of like tree rings. I wonder, if somewhere inside our bodies, we have something that looks like tree rings. Like, we are having knee surgery or something, for a torn ACL. We did it in the 11th grade while we were out walking the dog. And all of a sudden, we hear the tune, “Zip-A-Dee-Do-Dah” and we start running for the Ice Cream truck because we wanted one of those Strawberry Shortcake Bars, with that crunchy-like exterior. So there we are, running along at the speed of light, chasing the truck down Maple Street, and we didn’t see it coming. Fire Hydrant. Oh sure, it hurt like Bejesus when we hit the thing, and we wrangled around on the ground for four or five minutes, all the while cognizant of the fading tune of the Ice Cream Truck. Salt in the wound. The Strawberry Shortcake, just took a left on Elm Street.

But eventually, we come back from the place of blistering pain and we finally sit up on the curb. Of course, nonchalantly, look up and down the street, to make sure no one saw the one-sided collision with the fire hydrant. We have done 17 laps around the Sun for crying out loud. These things are important.

So we eventually, crawl our way back home, and after a bit, we manage a limp. And since we are not the jock-ish type, we have no reason to mend the thing. So now, finally, 37 years later, we are having the surgery to fix that knee, because it bothers us when you walk up and down the steps at the Football Stadium. And we are reminded that you never found our dog.

But now. There on the table, while we are under anesthesia, the surgeon, Dr. Stanley Byurman, proudly exclaims mid-procedure. “Look, everybody, there are Polly’s tree rings. Do we want to count them? And the nurse replies, “Sir, we have her chart. She is 54.” Stan: “Dang it, Freda. You take all the fun out of these things.”

Yeah. So. We are doing laps, some of us more than others.

And who can we thank for that? Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) was this Polish guy. An astronomer. And he really liked to study the sky. From the top of a Cathedral. Way up there, you can really spot an Ice Cream Truck from miles away. Nonetheless, in 1543 he wrote his book ‘The Revolution of Heavenly Orbs’. In it, he said the Earth revolves around the Sun once a year. Spinning on its axis once a day. A ‘heliocentric’ theory. This made a LOT of people mad, back in the day. It completely challenged the religious dogma of that time.

So yes. That’s how it all worked out. And we are reminded of it. As we stand by the table with our sparkly new knee, with all our tree rings inside. Then we blow out the candles on our birthday cake, the 54th. And look. Someone made our favorite. Strawberry Shortcake. And double-look, presents. What is this? A new puppy. It looks just like our dog from childhood, Reggie Dogma.

Everything in the Universe is connected.
Believe it.
All we have to do is to ask for the miracle. The Universe is a big place, but that miracle will eventually find its way home.
