Oh, Deer.

I’ve been thinking a lot about Superheroes. I may write about them soon. Because, sometimes, you need one. You just do.

You make be having a regular day, and the world is spinning around quite nicely, without any help or intervention from anyone. And then. It happens. Like when the piano suddenly crashes to the sidewalk, or,  when you drop a dozen perfectly good farm fresh eggs on the floor.

Those occasions.

The other evening, I was watching “our” deer eat. We feed them loads of corn and apples every day. There are basically two groups or tribes, or families.
The first, and most regular is a band of six. I call them Tilly’s Brood. She is the grandmother / mother. The  rest are different generations of her. Clearly, they are the snobs of the land. The dominant family. (We also have another band of five, who clamor.)

But on this evening, it was Tilly and her girls. They were all around the trough, and in the yard, crunching on said corn and apples. Talking about the rain, and this year’s latest color in fur, the gray-tan. Then, across the low lands comes another female deer. But she. Oh, she is injured badly. Her right front leg has been damaged, most likely broken, and she is limping heavily. Clearly, her intention was to join this group, find some refuge, and eat. She approached, slowly, carefully, heedful.

And then it happened. Tilly, and her oldest daughter broke from the group, ran out to meet her, but not with open hooves. No. They were there to run her off. I told Mary about the engagement, and she joined me, in watching the proceedings from our windows.

Again, the injured doe approached. And again, she was met with hostility. The henchmen were there to clear her away.

Suddenly, Mary got up out of her chair, and opened the door leading out to the deck. My eyebrows raised in question. “What was her plan?”

Welllllll. It turns out she didn’t have much of a plan. Not so much. Mary ran out on the deck and yelled. “Hey you two, stop that. STOP that right NOW! And then she clapped her hands, seven or eight times in succession.”

Not surprisingly, those seven deer ran with all their might, one limping badly, toward the marshy area and away. Out of sight. I stared at her in amazement.   Then she turns to me and says, “Hey. You want to walk down to the road with me?”

“Uhhh. What for?”
“To go see where they went.”
“Uhhhhhnnnn. We aren’t going to find them. And if we do, then what? They’ll run again.”
“C’mon Polly. Let’s go. Let’s go now.”
“Okay then.”

And off we went.

Spoiler Alert. We didn’t find them.

And that my friends, is where I really wanted my Superhero. Either for me to have the mad skills, or for  someone I could just flash the “Mouse Signal,” up into the sky.

If it were me, I would transform into a St. Francis-looking Hero, with the little baldy-round hair cut, and a brown burlap cape, tied around my neck with a rosary. Or something. I’d fly down, heal the wounded, and make them love one another. Just like that.

From there, I’d get busy on the rest of the world. Just like that.
But.  I’m not a Superhero.

Instead. I wish that peace be with you. Oh yes, and, love one another.
Just like that.
