Nailed it.

Sometimes things break. It happens. For the most part, they work just as they should. If we are lucky. But every now and again, a gasket blows, a wheel falls off, a cookie crumbles.

It is like pounding away at a nail, and suddenly the head of the hammer flies off. We didn’t think twice about that hammer while we were working. But once that head went sailing, we took notice.

This is just how life goes. Much of it works fine. It moves along, and we don’t routinely think about the things that are going right. But if something fails, we sure do pay attention.

I would venture to guess that most of us….. have … at the very least … a little something that is broken in our lives. It becomes easy for us to focus on whatever that might be. Sometimes we get really worked up over the wrong things.

Let’s get back to the hammer for a minute. Say the thing really does snap in two. We could pull up a chair, and look long and hard at the broken shaft lying on the floor. We could sit for hours and stare at the disembodied head. But that sure isn’t going to fix the hammer.

It might be better for us to go out and get a new one. But one thing is for sure. Sitting around feeling sorry for ourselves and our hammer doesn’t do anyone much good. And we have lots of nails to pound, after all.

Here’s what I’ve been thinking. I had a pretty busy weekend. We worked at the Bistro on Saturday, and had dinner with our oldest grandkids that night. Today, we had a boatload of friends here for a little swimming and pizza. And the whole while… I was reminded that I know a lot of really, really good people. Amazing people.

To the core good.

Sometimes the things that are broken can’t be replaced so easily. That loss stays with us. For quite a while, even. But there are other parts which are grand. Grand like gooey cinnamon rolls, and those kind of little ketchup packets that let you squeeze OR dip…. and people who are good to the core. And we must remember to give those things attention. The good parts.

The amazing.

The things that are fixed.
