My house thudded.

There are so many mysteries in the world.

Those things that happen, and you simply have no explanation for the reasoning behind it. If there is a reasoning.

Last night, the house, MY house, was making the most horrendous noises. For the initial part of this, I thought someone might be breaking in. However, we have all sorts of cameras here. Inside and out. So I began watching them, and there was no activity anywhere.

A big, “thudding” type noise would emerge, and then it would fall silent for another fifteen minutes or so. This went on for more than an hour. My two guard dogs, Little Ollie, and Littler Louis, were just as baffled as I. A big noise would happen, and both their little heads would jerk in my direction. They sat quietly, staring directly at me. Like, “Do something about this, human.”

I didn’t know what to do, other than to keep watching the cameras, with my loaded weapon on my lap, all the while reading my book. Finally, they stopped well after midnight.

A mystery. I’d say.

The other day I was thinking about the Deja Vu Phenomenon. It is a French term which describes the feeling that one has lived through the present situation before. That, you have been there. And you have done that. Essentially.

I used to have “Deja Vu’s” quite frequently. And it would not just be for an instant. Sometimes, it would seem like several moments would run together and play our right before my eyes. A life-like rerun.

There is no scientific explanation for it. Like dreams, there are theories about what might be happening in our brains. But most of science does not see this as any type of “precognition” or “prophecy.”

Some call it an anomaly of memory. Since there is that incredible sense of recollection. My opinion is this falls into the mystery category. Or the magic category. We experience the unknown sometimes. It is just that plain and simple.

As I mentioned, I don’t experience them as frequently these days. Maybe my brain is filling up with all the other details of the ordinary life, that there is no room for the mystical. Maybe I shouldn’t read as much as I do. Maybe the president of my brain closed the borders for no good reason, and now I am shit out of luck.

Doppelgängers are another good mystery. I used to get this more often in my younger days. People would say — and you’ve all heard it at least once — “There is someone that looks exactly like you. She lives in Podunk, Alaska. Honest to goodness.” Of course, then we all shrug our shoulders. What more is there to do? But it gives us cause to wonder. Is that person really our other-dimensional self? Our universal twin? Do they like Braunschweiger on crackers too? Did they steal a little rubber ball from the Woolworth’s in 1973 too?

All of it. A great swirling mystery. A puzzle. Enigmas.
The conundrum of conundrums.

Maybe, there is a God. Or a ruling force. (However you wish to consider this possibility.) And just maybe, these are all little God pranks. Funnies. Brain teasers.
Another mystery, that we will never know.

My only advice, if a big hand comes down from the sky, don’t shake it. There might be one of those trick buzzers on the palm.
