Like math. But cooler.

Science is a miracle. The people who are really smart at the sciences are also miraculous. We have come so far in our knowledge of the working world.

I am not sure why some people oppose scientific findings. Maybe they had a horrendous fourth-grade teacher. Or perhaps their scholastic aptitude for the subject is lacking. Maybe E=mc2 is not their favorite letter/number combo. I don’t know. But science is profound.

We humans used to do things like giving morphine to babies for teething pains; or use heroin to “calm” a cough. There were frontal lobotomies. Bloodletting. But through science, we have discovered that these things can be deadly. And we all know how that turns out.

Take Carbon Monoxide. Through science, we have come to find out that humans can not breathe this for any extended periods. It kills us. Oh, we could put on a breathing apparatus, and walk around while the oxygen holds out. We found this out too. Bravo science. Bravo miracles.

Yes, there are certain environments which will knock us down dead. Unfortunately, some of those environments exist in our very own bodies.

Disease.

If science isn’t for you, think of this as “The Invasion of the Body Snatchers” but the “Snatchers” are attacking from the inside.

To name a few, there are measles, influenza, tetanus, polio, smallpox, whooping cough, and so, so many more.

But science has found a way. Instead of getting a breathing mask that we wear on our faces, we can get one that we use on the inside. It is called a vaccine.

Vaccines are modern wonders. Yes, miracles. I cannot understand the uprising against them. Obviously, these arise from people who have not researched the incredible facts of support. But vaccines save millions of lives. They will not kill you. They won’t give you Autism. Or any other such monsters hiding in the closet.

This all came to mind because of Jonas Salk. Today is his birthday. He, thankfully, came into this world in the year 1914. And just in time. During the centuries before, and in the early to mid-1900s, Polio was killing people and also leaving them debilitated. Crippled. Deformed. But Jonas made his way into being a very smart science guy. He was a Medical Researcher and Virologist.

Thankfully, he discovered and developed the first successful polio vaccine. Before he made this miraculous discovery? Polio was considered the most frightening public health problem of the post-war (WWII) United States.

Here’s another thing about good Jonas. He didn’t care about personal profit. He did this for the love of humans. He was sitting down in a televised interview, and the reporter asked him who owned the patent to the vaccine. And our boy Jonas replied: “There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?”

And THAT is the point of all this.
The miracle of science. If you don’t understand it, at least believe in it.
As sure as the sun will rise again tomorrow.
There’s no patent on that. But it is guaranteed.
