Hi in the middle

pigohio

Being home, makes you appreciate all the good little things about it.  Ohio has some interesting things to consider…. sort of.

In any such case.  Here are a few.

• Fifty percent of the United States population lives within a 500-mile radius of Columbus, Ohio.  That’s something, I’ll tell you.  A lot of people right here and now, in Buckeye Land.
• Speaking of people… we have one that is right out of this world.  Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, was from Wapakoneta, Ohio.
• It is illegal to fish for whales on a Sunday in Ohio. I’m not kidding.  Monday through Saturday, you are good to go..  IF we had whales.
• Thomas A. Edison, invented a whole crap-load of stuff…. like the incandescent light bulb, the phonograph, and the early motion picture camera.  Tommy hailed from Milan.
• How about this for firsts?  Akron was the first city to use police cars.
• On the other end of that spectrum  from the lights, sirens, and lawbreakers….are a bunch of peaceful folks.  Ohio has the largest Amish population of any state in the nation.
• But…. I bet none of them  are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  Nonetheless, it is located in Canton.
• Women are prohibited from wearing patent leather shoes in public in Ohio. How come, you ask? It is so that men can’t see reflections of the women’s underwear in their shoes. We are a modest bunch, I suppose.
• Life Savers candy was invented by Clarence Crane of Garrettsville, Ohio in 1912.  I used to love the kind that came in those “Storybook” things at Christmas time.  Lifesavers…. initially…. were touted as a “summer candy” since they didn’t melt like chocolate.
• And finally….It is illegal for more than five women to live in one house in Ohio.  Estrogen restrictions, I suppose.

So there you have it.  A short list of interesting facts about Oho.  Home of the chocolate-covered peanut butter Buckeye.  And so much more.
