Guillemets, Apostrophes, and more.

Why doesn’t Polly draw Girl Mice? We are Girl Mice.

Do you remember how Cracker Jacks used to come with the surprise in the bottom of the box? Well. It was much, much more than an “added bonus.” It was also an Insurance Policy for the Cracker Jack folks. I mean, for the people who didn’t necessarily like the Cracker Jacks, there was always the chance for a nifty prize at the end. And this would encourage the repeat customer sequence. A “win-win” if you will.

It is a little like what I do here at Kid Wednesday. I write this thing every day, and then, as an added bonus, I offer a few quotes at the very last. So, on those days when my writing does not fit the bill, people can be satisfied that at the very least, they came away with a good quote from Lord Byron, or Crusty the Clown.

Here is a little glimpse behind the scenes though. Scouring my brain, and the internet, for a few decent quotes, sometimes takes more time than the actual writing. It is not an easy gig finding three substantial quotes — ones that will fill the plate, and satisfy the hungry appetite for wisdom.

In fact. Some quotes are downright balderdash. Nonsense. Rubbish. (Depending on your point of view.)

This line of thought all started this morning, when my “Quote of the Day” came in with my first cup of coffee. The proprietor, was one Stephen Jay Gould. And he said, “We pass through this world but once.”

It always surprises me when people assert something that they cannot know for sure. There are millions, and millions of people in this world, who believe that we make this journey, over, and over, and over again. That we keep coming back, until we finally get it right.

Personally, I am on my 3,807th trip. You see, I am “thick” in the Spiritual-Head. At any rate, the quote may or may not be true. Depending on your faith. But for fact? Who knows?

A friend of mine, just mentioned this great piece of advice to me this morning. She said, “Don’t believe everything you think.” Now those are some great words of wisdom. I wish we could scatter them around, to all people, like putting a million white feathers in front of a huge fan.

So yes. There have been some other Very Big Doozies amongst the questionable-quote categories.

“The idea that religion and politics don’t mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country.” –Rev. Jerry Falwell

“Hence today I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator: by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord.” –Hitler (Mein Kampf, Chapter 2)

“But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.” –Paul (I Tim 2:12)

I have read a blue-million which I do not agree with. But there are loads of people who live by these quotes.

It alarms me on a lot of levels. The thinking minds of the people in this world, seem to get us all into trouble. Hatred against others. Wars. Genocides. But. But then, I am told by other wise people in the world, that I should not worry. Like this.

“We are not ready for an unforeseen event that may or may not occur.”
– Dan Quayle, former U.S. Vice President

Thank goodness, for our razor-sharp-smart-leaders.
Keeping the country safe, from all the harmful things. Which, of course, only come from the southern parts of the world.

“I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will have Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my words.” — Donald Trump, Campaign launch rally, June 15, 2015.

Never mind all of that, though. Your prize in the bottom of the box is right below. And I am just a Cracker Jack. Polly Want A Cracker, Jack.
