A little bird told me.

It doesn’t surprise me actually, this little bird thing. Telling you. Telling us all. It is simply another way that we humans explain away our gut feelings. We can’t own it ourselves, so we give the credit to some obscure little Rose-Ringed Parakeet, or Chipping Sparrow. The little bird, telling us.

It probably got its start in the Bible, along with a WHOLE slew of other quirky phrases that we toss around. The actual phrase, ‘a little bird told me’ doesn’t appear in any version of the Bible. Nopers. But the core source of this expression probably is biblical. A quote from Ecclesiastes 10-20 (King James Version):

“Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.”

And there you have it. Clear as mud.

Yes. Our intellect is a magnificent and powerful thing. Yet. Equally as grand, is the intuition. The inner reaction. The deep down in your soul.

We all know the old Einstein quote. “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” As true as I’m standing here. Albert.

It works, sometimes, in mysterious ways.

Consider Tomato Soup. Last week, I wrote a little piece, and I inadvertently mentioned Tomato Soup and Grilled Cheese. I hadn’t thought about Tomato Soup in years. And as far as I know, it hadn’t thought about me. But since my “shout out” to the potage, I have been besieged by the stuff. The Universe is pouring it on me. It has come up in conversations, in news articles, on people’s designer clothing, and in my Twitter feed. Andy Warhol, excluded. But Tomato Soup has been everywhere I turn.

I surely don’t know what it means, but it seems highly coincidental.

Do our thoughts truly manifest our wishes, as some people suggest? Or is there some sort of Cosmic Percolation— a frothing coffee pot — which bubbles away, and drips on our little unsuspecting heads? God. If that is true, I truly have to switch to decaf.

Coincidence, and Circumstance, and Providence, and Chance: Are they? Could they be? All the same as Reality, and Punctuality, and Sequence, and Order?

The other night, we were watching a show about that same guy Einstein, and how he theorized about the Black Holes in the Universe. The enormity of it. The infinite, and the boundless concept of our space. I turned to Mary and said, “Do you know there are 100 Billion Planets in our Galaxy ALONE?” And then, “It is hard for me to fathom that kind of immensity, and even harder to believe that we humans are the only ones floating around in all this freaking space.”

Do you know how many little birds that makes?

Yeah. It makes a lot of little birds. Telling us so. We might be well-suited to give them a listen.
