Falling Earth

We have to quit supporting candidates who don’t care about the environment.

Period.

Our earth is dying.

It isn’t a fairy tale. It comes straight from a United States Government Report. Released yesterday. And that report delivered a tremendously terrible warning about climate change.

We will experience its devastating impacts. Our economy could lose hundreds of billions of dollars. People will die. And all of this by the end of the century.

And here’s the big thought right now. The scientists are thinking of dimming the sun. They say it would work. But let us clearly think about it. We have come to a point where we would rather “take on” the sun, then challenge the greedy leaders who coddle to the very rich in our economic system?

What the hell are we doing?

There are people, and lots of them, who insist that there is no global environmental crisis. Do they not watch the news? Forest fires killed hundreds in California one week ago. Yesterday, 173 Sea Turtles were found dead. Frozen to death. Our world has experienced one hurricane after another. Tsunamis. Earthquakes. Hawaii’s volcanoes erupted for several months doing major damage to the main island. Tornadoes sweep the land and leave a trail of rubble. Blizzards of epic proportions. The ice caps are melting. The shorelines are rising. The environment is puking on us. It is choking up all the garbage and pollution and fracking and pillaging, right back in our laps.

Yes, natural disasters have always happened. But the planet only used to sustain a “major” occurrence once every 50 years, or more. Now, we have a major crisis every week.

When, when, when are people going to wake up?

I’ve become a skeptic when it comes to a solution. I have.

I didn’t used to be this way. I used to believe in the happy ending. The Silver Lining. The Golden Key. But then. Then. They quit putting the magic surprises in the bottoms of Cracker Jack Boxes.

So many of my friends assure me there will be a turn in our nation’s leaders. That there will be hope on the horizon, not only for the environment, but for other common sense things like Equal Rights for People. Not just white, Christian, straight people. But ALL people. That’s what they think. It’s right around the corner. But. I don’t see it coming.

I am morphing into a doubting Thomas. I am losing my faith with each passing day. I think the majority of Americans would like to continue crushing beer cans on their foreheads, firing their guns when the damn well please, and keeping women in their place, at the stove, fixing Macaroni & Cheese with the cut-up-hotdogs, to go with the endless stream of Pabst Blue Ribbon. All of this so they can drive down the road in their really big pick up trucks with their Confederate Flags waving. I’ve seen and heard them.

I certainly don’t have a “complete confidence” that there will be change. In fact, it is barely a shred of hope. But that tiny thread is enough for me to keep conserving. Driving less, consuming less. Recycling. Most importantly, voting for the people who will give us the best chance at healing our planet. Wishing peace to all people, in spite of their hatred toward people like me.

But. I want to believe. So much. I want to hold hope in my heart. That optimism, and trust. That conviction that the good will win the day. And that is where I’ll have to start again. To move there next. Kneeling in the dirt, next to that little seed of faith.

If only I had a green thumb.
