Duper. As in Super.

When I was a little girl, I really had a thing for Superheroes.  I loved the comics about them, and the cartoons on TV.  All of them.   From Batman to Superman and everyone in between.  Aquaman was one of my favorites back in those days.   Still is, actually.

My sister and I were a real pair, when we were in our early ages.  We used to pretend like we were Superheroes.  We would play up in our bedroom, mostly climbing tall buildings in the form of bunk beds.  And saving entire cities from certain destruction.  We would dive from tall cliffs (same bunk beds) into torrent waters to save lowly citizens in dire straights.

Yes we did.  Makeshift superheroes that we were.  My sister always had first pick of the cast.  She was, and still is, four years older, afterall.

But most of the time, I would be Aquaman.

Anyway, tonight, as I thought about it, I think I understand why I liked it so much.  Superheroes did amazing things, because they had… crazy good Super Powers.  Super strength, or speed, or intelligence, or talents.  Sometimes it would be a lot of different things all mixed in to one.

They were remarkable with their powers.  Like magic.

But the thing of it is…. we mere mortals have super powers too.  Some of us, more than others.  One of my favorite quotes is by Eden Phillips.  It goes…

“The universe is full of magical things, patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper.”

I believe this to be true.   You see, I also believe we are spiritual beings in human bodies.  Once our human bodies give out… our spirits will continue on.  Not restrained by our dull human wits.  We will know the magic of the beyond.

But there are times, here in this life…. here in our human bodies ….  that we sharpen our wits… our awareness… our understanding.  And at those times, we become those Superheroes.

I’ve said it before, but I mean it.  I know a lot of Superheroes.  Maybe we can’t keep that “sharp wittedness” up every minute of every day.  But there are times, when we certainly have our moments.  Our little glimpses of all this magic which is just waiting for us… in this Universe.   And we act like it.

In those moments.

You are the one wearing the cape.

When all about you seems precarious, or delicate, or even chaotic…. and you can meet that moment with grace, and kindness, and all-out magic….

I do believe in Superheroes.
