Do this. Not that.

I had to go to the BMV today.

That should be enough said, right there.   In most cases… especially in bigger cities… the BMV stands for  the Baffling, Maddening, Venture.  But our little BMV here in Eaton, Ohio is a very good one, I think.  At least in my experience.  They were busy on this day.  I stopped by two different times, and the line was out the door.  On my third attempt, it was manageable, so I hunkered down.

They were very helpful, and I was in and out before I knew it.

But while I was there in line…. I had some wondering going on.

Lady Gaga, for one.  I wonder if she drives.  If so, what state?  And, the big question:  I wonder what it says on her driver’s license.  Is it like… Gaga, Lady?   Or just Lady Gaga?  You can bet the photo on that thing is priceless.  It also made me wonder what her friends call her?  Laydle?  Gah?  Or the whole shebang… Lady Gaga?   I bet I never find out.

The great mysteries of life.

Those mysteries come in all shapes and sizes.  You see, I also learned while standing in line, that it is illegal to hunt for whales on Sunday, in Ohio.  And now I know.  For crying out loud,  I certainly won’t make THAT mistake again.

The BMV has a little screen on the wall, which generates useful  and useless content.  This, I assume, is to make your time go faster as you stand in line.  For instance.  It informed me that the first ambulance service was started in Cincinnati, in 1865.  And of course, the story of the whales.

AND…. there was SO much more.

Another item of interest, reminded me, that it is illegal in Ohio to get a fish drunk.   It has been a long time since I’ve gotten a fish drunk.  I think it was a Cod.  We drank our Basses off.  Just for the Halibut.  But seriously, this law could be problematic… for the likes of Julia Child, and such.

I overheard some things too.  Like …. someone named Martha had taken the car without Dan knowing about it.  He called the police.  She got pulled over north of town.  Dan and Martha then got in a HUGE fight that night, and the police were called again.  The lady in line was pretty animated in her telling.  It is hard to be discreet when you are eavesdropping on the drama.

Oh this world of ours.  It is filled with mystery, and wonder, and three billion little tidbits, just waiting around each and ever corner.

It comes to us from all sides, it seems.   But no matter how we get it….  the fact of the matter is… sometimes… we simply don’t “GET” it.   There are times when it just doesn’t make sense.   It does not compute.  We don’t seem to be in Kansas anymore.

The mysteries. I’m not sure what the best answer is, when things seem completely illogical or totally absurd.  But I DO know those are the times when WE have to be grounded.  These are the times when we need to decide if things can be changed by our actions, or if it is better to be at peace, and accept.  And as the wonderful prayer of serenity tells us… these are the times when we need to the wisdom to know the difference.
