Born a big bunch

Barry lights it up. Little People RUN!

March 22 is a famous birthday day.
A lot of days come and go without many famous notables’ having a birthday. It plain old seems, that some days are more prolific than others. Born under the Sign of Aries. Even my Facebook Birthday Friends were off the charts today. I had about 7 FB friends celebrating their day.

So for this glad occasion, I’ve scratched the surface and listed a few here. The famous ones. And, in honor of their good days, I’ve included an observation, or two.

1868 – Robert A. Millikan, American physicist (photoelectric effect; Nobel Prize in 1923), born in Morrison, Illinois (d. 1953)

This is not an easy thing to win a Nobel Prize. But old Bob did it for his works in Physics. The photoelectric effect, which has nothing to do with getting your photo taken while doing the Electric Slide. Boogie On Mr. Millikan.

1887 – Chico Marx, [Leonard Marx], American comedian (Marx Brothers), born in NYC, New York (d. 1961)

Chico. He used that Italian persona for his onstage character and was constantly trying to outfox Groucho. Chico was okay. But I found more fun in Harpo. And his horn. But there’s nothing like a good bowl of Duck Soup.

1908 – Louis D L’Amour, author (Hondo, Jubal Sackett), born in Jamestown, North Dakota

This, for my friend Janet. Louis is one of her favorite authors. Giddy Up, there, little dogie. This guy wrote 89 novels, and had 14 short story collections. That’s jangling your spurs. That’s a lotta’ Western Story Telling.

1912 – Karl Malden [Mladen George Sekulovich], American actor (Streets of San Francisco, American Express, A Streetcar Named Desire), born in Chicago, Illinois (d. 2009)

If I had a Hollywood friend, it might pick Karl. I could hang out with him, and people would notice his big nose, and not mine.

1931 – William Shatner, Canadian author, director and actor (Star Trek, T J Hooker), born in Montreal, Quebec

Star Trek was okay. I wasn’t a Trekkie though, by any means. But Shatner always seemed a little one-dimensional. Maybe that’s necessary when Scotty beams you up. Or it could be the aftermath.

1947 – James Patterson, American author (Alex Cross, Witch and Wizard), born in Newburgh, New York

Another author. He puts Western Louis to shame. He has written 147 novels. I simply can’t imagine. It takes me 147 days to write 147 blogs, which has nothing to do with anything. I’ve never read a Patterson book though.

1948 – Andrew Lloyd Webber, English composer (Phantom of the Opera, Cats), born in London, England

Webber. A great composer. Little known fact. His twin brother, Amos, invented the Webber grill. He dropped the extra “B” because he wanted to make it on his own, and not the Webber name. Another interesting fact. Growing up, the Webber boys had 11 cats. Okay, that’s not true. None of it. But it should be.

1952 – Bob Costas, sportscaster/talk show host, born in Queens, New York

I can only say that I stayed at the same “resort” as Costas at the same time. I saw him in passing. He always wore a ball cap. Or it could have been Pat Summerall. Sportscasters all run together in my mind.

1972 – John Farquhar, tight end (New Orleans Saints)

This is only notable because of his last name. Any time I see the name Farquhar, it reminds me of the short little King in Shrek. Lord Farquhar. And his mirror. And the broken Gingerbread man. Have you seen the Muffin Man?

1976 – Reese Witherspoon, American actress (Pleasantville, Legally Blonde, Sweet Home Alabama), born in New Orleans, Louisiana

Her name reminds me of eating ice cream with chocolate and peanut butter chunks. Sort of like the other Legally Blonde Star, Tubby Cookydough.

2233 – James T Kirk, science fiction captain of USS Enterprise (Star Trek)

I only know this about Kirk because I looked it up. Same birthday as William Shatner. Except the year.

Happy Birthday to these folks and all the March 22nd-ites.

Live long and prosper.
