Big Sky. And Such.

The sun.

Bright, brilliant, magnificent ball of energy.

On some days, its heat reaches the earth with such incredible intensity.  And then…. we say… …  “Well hey there Floyd.  Dang.  It’s a hot one.  We got a real scorcher today.”  And we say back…. “Yep. Sure do Amos.”

The Sun is mostly composed of hydrogen (70%) and Helium (28%).  It has an powerful magnetic field.  Wicked powerful.

Here is another thing.  The Sun is middle-aged. It is about 4.5 billion years old by now.  Happy Mid-Life Crisis Sun.   It has already burned off about half of its store of Hydrogen.  Burn baby burn. Disco Inferno…

It has enough left to continue to burn Hydrogen for approximately another 5 billion years.  I might not be around. Then again, we don’t know for sure about that.  At any rate, I worry enough about the future already.  I’m just going to check that one off my list, for about 4.99 billion years.

Why am I telling you all this?  All of this big information about our sun?  Like….  the Sun is currently a type of star known as a Yellow Dwarf.  Hummmm. A Dwarf.  Hiiiii Hoooooooo.  Hiiiiii Hooooooooo.  It’s off to work I goooooooo.

Or… why am I telling you…..  that one million Earths could fit inside the Sun.  And. The Sun’s surface area is 11,990 times that of the Earth’s.  And. The Sun contains 99.86% of the mass in the Solar System?  Why all this?

Because.  Sometimes…. we humans… have a tendency to think we are pretty important.  Like, on a singular level.  We can take ourselves pretty seriously.  It is easy to do. We’re human. It is what we know.

But, we are blips, at best.  In a very, very, very big place.

You see… for as big as the sun is… it all gets bigger.  Infinitely.

How’s this?   The Sun travels at 220 kilometres per second.   That’s pretty dang fast Floyd.  Yep.  Sure is Amos.

The Sun is 24,000-26,000 light years from the  very center of the galaxy.  And… aaaaaannnnddd….  it takes the Sun 225-250 million years to complete ONE orbit of our galaxy.  In case you did not know… we all reside here in the galaxy of  Milky Way.

We are Milky-Wayians.  Milky-Wayites?  Milky Wayatans?

I guess it would be polite to make the Milky Way Candy Bar our galactic food.  The Reese Cup gets too much press as it is.

Back to us.  Small humans.

Yes, it seems like we are specks. But, I have to propose that it might be much more than that.  We have something within us.  Deep within.   And that something?

It is self-awareness.  This is a unique and wonderful thing.

We think. We create.  We also seek to understand.  It would seem that we are  driven to understand. To see our connection to all of this “BIG-ness.”

Certainly, we think… there must be a connection to all of this.   So. We pray. We meditate.  We postulate. We work for a better world, and for our better place in this connection.

Our energy.  Our spirit. Our souls.  Yes, all of this is something much more.  We must take into account our human spirit… and put it right back into the equation of the universe.   If we don’t remember this… we do in fact….seem small.

But our energy goes on, in ways we cannot understand.  So.  We must remember to DO our part.  That is where our goodness comes in.  We have to make sure the kindness and integrity goes.  That is goes way beyond the years of our physical bodies.  It continues on… in our universe.  In the infinity.  And that.  Is….. …..  is pretty huge.

Like.  Bigger than the sun.
