Big Others

Certain things in life are…. well… uncertain.

You just never know.  As they say.  The weather is one of those uncertainties…. for sure.   (Geez, I sound like one big Oxymoron tonight.)

But truthfully, you can’t really ever know what the weather will do.  Today, here, was cold and windy, relatively speaking.

Now, in Camden, Ohio… it is also cold and windy.  But on an entirely different dimension.  Camden is 20 degrees Fahrenheit, and snowy, and blustery… with the windiest of chills.

The Grand Cayman is 25 degrees Celsius.  And windy, like ocean windy.  A tremendous difference.  And as I said… relative.

So it was one of those do-nothing kind of days.  We took a bunch of walks, and such.  Hopefully, the weather will brighten up a little tomorrow. Like Annie says….. the sun’ll come out… tomorrow.  Bet your bottom dollar….

But here is another unpredictable thing.  People. You just really never know how someone might react to something, or even how you might react yourself.  And we all know that familiar saying. Although, Steve Martin said it best….. “Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, when you do criticize him, you’ll be a mile away and have his shoes.”

Well… you know what I mean.

The other thing about unpredictable people… are those times when you go to public places.  You never can say for sure who might be in your midst. Like, it could be Diana Ross and the Supremes of something. And there are those nights, when you are having a lovely time at dinner with your beautiful family…. and the table behind you gets seated with… for lack of any better words…  a group of big-fat-meanies.

Holy smack-a-rollies.  This table.. the entire bunch of them… were some of the rudest folks I’ve had to listen to in some time.  I don’t know why I let them get under my skin.  Other than the fact that they were being incredibly rude to the waiter.  His name was Tido.  And they just don’t come any sweeter than this guy Tido.  He is quick to smile, and very kind.  But as the evening wore on….it looked like this table was beating him down.

But obviously, I let the whole deal bother me.  I mean, I am writing about it tonight.  The thing of it is, I don’t know what do about it.  I don’t know how to “let it go” or even if I should?  I mean, some say we should be proactive in life.  And others say we should be non-confrontational.  And still others tell us to embrace them and love them anyway.  I talk here, all the time, about being compassionate and fostering empathy.  But how do I do that with big-fat-meanies?

I just don’t know.  Maybe I simply haven’t walked a mile in their shoes.

At any rate,  our family….. at our table… enjoyed each other immensely, despite the occasional glimpse of nasty from beyond.

Putting it all aside, I have high hopes that the sun’ll come out tomorrow.
And that is a good thing.
