Atom 12, Atom 12…

There are atoms everywhere. Every element that is known to mankind, and them some, are made up of atoms.

It is easy. If you have Hydrogen, our lightest element, it is made up of tiny little Hydrogen atoms.

The notion of all of this started a long time ago. I am talking, a VERY long time ago. The first guy, who had the idea of the atom, was named Democritus. This was way back in 530 B.C.

It took a while, but in 1808, an English school teacher and scientist named John Dalton proposed the modern atomic theory. John Dalton, must have really been thinking one day.

And here are the first very simple parts of it.
Every element is made up of atoms. And elements put together everything in the world. We’ve already hashed that one out. (You know the old joke. Never trust an atom. The make up everything.)
Okay.
All atoms, of any single element, are the same. Like Oxygen. All Oxygen atoms are alike. Or like the Sneeches. Or Gold, or Plutonium. Or Sneeches.
And then, when you have different elements, THEIR atoms are different sizes and shapes and weight. Like, Lead atoms are WAY heavier than Helium atoms. Right? Lead balloon? Helium balloon?

There are some more rules, about forming compounds, and such. And no new atoms can be created, destroyed, or changed.

But what I really want to talk about is the structure.

HEY. Snap out of IT. There is going to be a QUIZ after. So come ON. Get back in the Kid Wednesday Game here. Okay.

In every atom, there is a nucleus. A center. And in that center is a Proton and a Neutron. Protons are positive (+1 charge). Neutrons are….. neutral.
And then, spinning around that nucleus, is an Electron. They have a negative charge (-1 charge).

Well. All of this hit me again, last night. We were having a discussion about negativity in people. And of course, the opposite. Those amazing positive people too. I commented that I feel like I am frequently combatting negativity in myself.

The whole world spun around before my eyes. Like in the movies, when the person in the hallway realizes the killer is RIGHT behind them with an ax. And the whole screen starts hyper-warping and spinning around. That was ME, last night.

It totally hit me. Our whole entire world, our planet, our everything, IS, at the very core, a spinning vortex of a positive charge and a negative charge, pulling and pushing at one another.

No wonder I feel those negative urges from time to time. My Electrons are winning. I mean, truthfully, the law in every atom defines that there is always an equal number of Protons to Electrons, so the atom is neutral in charge.

But somehow, SOMEHOW, I think, one or the other starts to surge.

You know those times, when we are easily happy, and positive and good. Versus the times when we are mopey, downtrodden, and negative. The reason is that our dang atoms are outa whack, Jack Kerouac. That has to be it. At the very core of things.

I’m off to write my dissertation on this. And then I will send it somewhere. Like I am pretty sure Harvard will be interested. Or at least, Cracker Jack College. With the magic surprise when you enroll.

So. Until I get back, I hope all is great and good. I truly hope that your Protons are kicking some positive butt today.
