How it works…

Today, a good friend talked very specifically about having premonitions. She knew something was about to happen, and it did.  Twice.  Very recently.   Unrelated to her stories… but earlier in the day, I thought (out loud), “I haven’t seen our deer feeding lately.  They must be dining incognito.  This evening I will count on seeing them.”  And guess what happened.

Coincidence?  Maybe.

A big long pause here… and an even BIGGER But.

You know…. here is what I think about all of that.  We will never totally understand how energy works.

It manifests itself in a multitude of ways that we cannot fathom.

Let me interject here, and talk about my boy, Einstein.  When he was developing the Theory of Relativity, he got physically ill.  He had liver problems, his whacky hair was falling out, headaches, sick to his stomach, and on.

He might be the smartest guy ever.  But he was struggling to get his mind around the perplexity of relativity.  He asked his smartest of friends to help him. We are talking Brainiacs.  But they could not.  And, when it was all said and done, he cranked it out on his own.

Now.  If a smart guy like that has trouble realizing the potential of energy = mass times the speed of light (squared)…. imagine what the rest of us simpletons go through just thinking about our the magical powers of our microwave ovens.

When I talk about energy, I mean the “all” of it.  Everything is completely connected.  Everything.  It always cracks me up, when someone says (especially when they are talking about there self-starter business)…  “I got where I am without any help from anyone.  Even the government.”

Silly Rabbit. Trix are for Kids.  Of course that is completely absurd.  If the guy ever drove anywhere, shopped anywhere, used a library, watched TV, or took a crap, he had help and involvement from TONS of other resources.  Which then has a trickle down effect on everything else.

Carl Sagan once said,  “If you want to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first create the universe.”

Likewise, John Muir noted, “When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe.”

Thich Nhat Hanh explains it this way.  If you can understand, you will see that this page … (oh, pretend for a minute this is a book with a paper page, and not a computer screen)…. (to continue)… you will see that this page contains the clouds.  Without the trees there would be no paper for this page.  Without the earth and soil in which to grow the tree, there would be no tree.  Without the rain, to nourish the tree and it’s growth, no paper.  Without the clouds, no rain.

And so it goes to infinity and beyond, Buzz Lightyear.

So here we are.  You sitting there.  Me here.  Simultaneously connected to one another and the big rest of everything else.  Joined at the waist to the rest of the Universe.

I like it like that.  But with it, comes great responsibility.  Our every day choices make a difference to everything else.  Count on it.  So we should take good care of it. Of our world.  Of each other.  Of ourselves.

And as much as I’d like to, I will never understand the magnitude and immensity of how all this energy works.  It made Einstein a little crazy.  I sure am not going to think it too hard.

I DO know this for sure about energy.  I just wish I had a little more of it most days.

“Just as the wave cannot exist for itself, but is ever a part of the heaving surface of the ocean, so must I never live my life for itself, but always in the experience which is going on around me.”
