Kix or Life

Now for me… spirituality is very important. I’ve made that very apparent to those of you who have been reading this thing, for several years now.

And for some reason, the older I get, the more it becomes necessary for me to find clarity in all of this.

There in, lies the problem.  Sort of.  You see, I don’t subscribe to any one religion.  At all.  And I have long held to the idea that none of us really know for sure.

Seriously.  No matter who you are, or what you believe in, you could be completely right.  On the other hand, you could be completely wrong.  It is also important for me to learn about different kinds of beliefs, and religious practices.  So lately, I’ve been doing a lot of reading on these matters.

Which has my undies all bunched up in a knot, at this point.

I wish knowing a life purpose and direction were as easy as choosing your breakfast cereal.

Okay, I feel a segue coming on.

And here it is.  I can often be heard saying… “It’s magically delicious.”  Ahhh… the old Lucky Charms slogan.  The other night we had the kids over for dinner and I said it at least 10 times as I ate the dinner Mary had fixed.  “It’s magically delicious.”  I then had to ask… does any one even eat Lucky Charms any more?

I had to look this up now.  As it turns out… here are the big guns in the breakfast cereal world.

1.    Honey Nut Cheerios (General Mills)
2.    Frosted Flakes (Kellogg’s)
3.    Honey Bunches of Oats (Post)
4.    Cheerios (General Mills)
5.    Cinnamon Toast Crunch (General Mills)
6.    Special K (Kellogg’s)
7.    Frosted Mini Wheats (Kellogg’s)
8.    Lucky Charms (General Mills)
9.    Froot Loops(Kellogg’s)
10.    Raisin Bran (Kellogg’s)

You see there… Lucky Charms is alive and well… and holding their own at number eight.

Then, I thought… what about World Religions.  And here are the top results for those.

  1. Christianity     2.2 billion
  2. Islam     1.6 billion
  3. Secular / Nonreligious / Agnostic / Atheist     ≤1.1 billion
  4. Hinduism     1 billion
  5. Chinese traditional religion     394 million
  6. Buddhism     376 million
  7. African traditional religions     100 million
  8. Sikhism     23 million
  9. Spiritism     15 million
  10. Judaism     14 million

And if you match them up, number to number … well…. it could go all sorts of ways.  It seems like there are a whole bunch of nuts and flakes in the top ten list.  You pick the list.

Back when I ate breakfast cereal, my favorite was Cap’n Crunch.   It didn’t even make the top 10.  I bet my Spiritual Beliefs wouldn’t make the top 10 at this point either.  Nonetheless.

The thing I realized though.. the thing that struck me… is how diversified both lists are.  We humans.  Here we are, sharing the planet, all together… all with equal “rights” to be here.  And so many divergent opinions about how the world should be.

And maybe this is not such a bad comparison.  Sure we all have our favorite cereal.  We eat Honey Nut Cheerios every day.  We have always done it that way.  But maybe some morning we ought to try the Special K, or the Frosted Mini-Wheats… just to see if there is something we might be missing out on.

From that point on, you just have to hope for some milk. Oh.  And a bowl.  And a spoon.

It is just how Life goes.  For Kix.
